Audi’s Brussels Plant Kicks Off New Q8 E-tron

Audi has commenced production of the newly launched top model in Audi’s electric SUV range – the Q8 e-tron in Belgium. What used to be the e-tron is now called the Q8 e-tron to make it fit better within the lineup. The German automaker has given its e-SUV a thorough update by revising the vehicle’s appearance and technology.

The company announced that its Q8 e-tron will reach customers in Europe & US as a certified net carbon-neutral vehicle. This feat was made possible thanks to Audi’s Brussels manufacturing plant which has had carbon-neutral production since 2018.

About Brussels Plant

Back in 2007, Audi received the plant from VW & started building its A1 hatchback and later the A1 Sportback. But by 2018, the luxury automaker had shifted their production in favor of its original e-tron and e-tron Sportback. Since then, the Belgium plan has delivered around 160,000 units of Audi’s first electric model while being a role model for sustainable production & a pioneer for the brand’s strategic environmental program – Mission: Zero.

Having completely switched to green power as early as 2012, this “Factory of the Future” installed one of the region’s largest photovoltaic systems on the plant premises, covering an area of 107,000 square meters. The system, good for generating 9,000 megawatts of power every year, helps avoid 1,881 tons of carbon emissions each year.

What’s more, the plant has transported things in and out of the plant only by green freight since May 2022. Moreover, the companies supplying battery cells to Audi are also obliged to use only renewable energy sources for their production.

The New Q8 E-Tron

Regarding the new Q8 e-tron, Audi promises a range of up to 582 kilometers according to the WLTP test cycle. Whereas the Sportback Q8 e-tron would go up to 600 on a single charge. With the facelift, Audi has used this opportunity to increase the size of the e-tron’s base battery pack by 29 percent ie, from 69 kWh to 89 kWh.

The luxury automaker has made use of recycled materials including polyester fibers manufactured from PET bottles & used textiles in some components for the e-SUV.

official statement

“With its increased efficiency and range, as well as its sharpened design, the new Audi Q8 e-tron is a strong statement for electromobility. Brussels has done valuable pioneering work. We are learning from our experience of having delivered around 160,000 vehicles worldwide. As the next step, we will leverage this experience to ramp up battery production in Ingolstadt.” said Gerd Walker, the head of production and logistics at Audi AG.
