Avalanche Mailbag: What Is Makar’s Nickname?

Let’s do an Avalanche Mailbag here. Been a couple months since my last one, I think anyway. First question: a very vitally important one about Cale Makar:

This keeps me up at night. What is Makar’s nickname among the guys? He defies the basic “er” or “y” added to his name.

— Snydone (@SteveSnyd) December 17, 2022

A great question, because Makar’s last name truly does make it pretty much impossible to hang the usual “ie” or “er” nickname on him, via everlasting NHL tradition.

I’ve asked around and…Makar really doesn’t have a nickname right now. I’ve heard mostly he’s just called “Cale”, lol. I’ve heard he’s occasionally been called “salad” as in a “kale salad” but I don’t think that stuck. Makar has said that some guys called him “juice” before, but don’t think that stuck either.

So, what should his nickname be, people?

By the way, this reminds me of the time we interviewed Carl Soderberg when he signed with the Avalanche and someone asked him what his nickname was and he said it was just “Carl.”

What do injured players do? Are they at games? Do they meet with their teammates?

— Aaron Cali (@aaronmcali) December 17, 2022

Unless they’re in concussion protocol, they’re almost always around the rink doing rehab and they usually go to games and, yes, hang with teammates.

What’s really going on with Byram?

— Chris Hill (@chriskhill0818) December 17, 2022

He doesn’t have a concussion, according to the team. I know everyone is suspicious of that, but Jared Bednar doesn’t lie about stuff, and he reiterated yesterday it’s a lower-body injury.

Bednar said he’s making progress, but he’s still week-to-week with the injury. That’s all I got.

I said this on the site the other day, but I’m done trying to play Sherlock Holmes anymore on Avalanche injuries. All I get is grief when I do that, so it’s not worth it to me anymore. They’ll be back when they’ll be back.

Out of the entire ’01 Cup roster, who all/how many is/are in a front office/coaching position for an NHL team now?

— Dani (@Dani718) December 17, 2022

Good questions. I’m going to count players who had previous NHL positions as part of this answer, so here goes:

Patrick Roy, Chris Drury, Joe Sakic, Brad Larsen, Dan Hinote, Adam Foote, Rob Blake, Steven Reinprecht, Nolan Pratt.

I didn’t include Alexei Gusarov and Adam Deadmarsh, because they weren’t on final Cup roster. But they’ve had NHL jobs too.

Who/what dictates regional blackouts on the national networks? The fact that nhl tonight is blacked out during Avs games because they might show live Avs updates is insane.

— chado (@cdstukey) December 17, 2022

Part of Altitude’s contract in having Avalanche rights is they have territorial rights in the Denver area, to black out the games. That’s just the way it is.

Yes, I know, everyone is beyond frustrated with Altitude/Comcast story. I am finally dumping Comcast in the next eight days, by the way, when my contract runs out. $244 a month for their “Triple Play” became just too much, especially when I can’t even watch a damn Avalanche game.

What is the future of Martin Kaut? Analysis & predictions? 🙂

— Grzegorz Kociuba (@grzegorz_ka86) December 17, 2022

Never say never, but I don’t love Kaut’s chances of getting another meaningful chance with the Avalanche. I think the last straw might have been had with his most recent demotion.

He can make that all change with his play. But I just don’t like the odds of a long future with the Avalanche anymore. Jared Bednar basically spelled it out recently: Kaut just wasn’t consistent enough while here.

Which player in Avs history has had the best sense of humor (and give us an example)?

— Josh Mishell (@joshmishell) December 17, 2022

I would say Erik Johnson is right up there. He pranks a lot of teammates. Here is one example, going all the way back to 2013 with former Av Ryan “Sauce” Wilson.

Which Avs player would be the best at a different per sport? And what’s the sport?

— Corey Custer (@CoreyCCuster) December 17, 2022

That’s an easy one: Nathan MacKinnon, golf. He’s a scratch golfer. Or at least he was.

Finally, to summarize many questions: Are the Avalanche looking for a center, and what might the price be? Yes, I think they are looking for a center. As far as what it might cost, that’s speculation at this point. I don’t really like tossing out names unless I hear specifically from someone in the know that it’s out there.
