The 24-year-old blueliner provided the Avalanche with the game’s icebreaker and a 1-0 lead heading into the first period as he set NHL history as the fastest defenseman to reach 200-career points (53G, 147A) by doing so in 195 – career games.

After holding Dallas’ power play off the board just over five minutes into the first period – featuring some big stops from Georgiev – the Avalanche capitalized on their first power play which they received at 8:41 as Mikko Rantanen drew a hooking penalty on Joel Kiviranta .

As Colorado’s top-ranked power play went to work, Arturi Lehkonen fed a pass below the goal line to Rantanen. The Finnish winger cycled the puck out to the top of the right faceoff circle. Makar skated into the pass as he sniped a slap shot into the top left corner of the goal over Oettinger’s right shoulder at 10:10.

Makar – in typical, humble – Makar fashion credited the accomplishment of becoming the fastest defenseman to reaching 200-career points to his team.

“If we don’t have this group of guys I wouldn’t be hitting these milestones,” Makar said postgame.

GAME SUMMARY:

Colorado executed a gutsy effort against the Stars. And despite going 1-for-6 on the power play – including one chance in overtime – they managed to hold on and eventually, prevail in the shootout to pick up wins in all three games of their three-game road trip.

The Avalanche concluded the first period matching Dallas’ 11-shot effort in the frame and taking a 1-0 lead courtesy of Makar.

Dallas evened up the score 1-1 in the second period where they also outshot Colorado 8-7 in the frame.

Robertson, who is riding a 12-game point streak now for the Stars, charged towards the net as he carried the puck. Georgiev made the stop on the doorstep, but lost control of the puck against the post as he sat back on it. Robertson collided with Andrew Englund on the play, which created a net-front scramble and knocked both Georgiev and the net off balance.

The play was immediately reviewed and determined by the officials to stand as a good goal for Dallas.

Colorado regained their lead early in the final period of play as Newhook buried a rebound on the doorstep at 2:06. The play started as Martin Kaut – who had left the game in the first period after a collision along the boards, but returned in the second – skated the puck out from below the goal line and dished it off to Englund at the point before absorbing a hit from a Dallas defenseman.

Englund fired off a shot that was blocked in the slot and kicked out to the lower right faceoff circle for Evan Rodrigues, who turned, took his time and chipped a shot into Oettinger’s chest. The rebound popped out to the net front and Newhook put away the puck to give Colorado a 2-1 lead.

After Colorado’s power play went 0-for-2 in the final period of play, the Stars were down just by a goal and pulled Oettinger in the final minute of play in exchange for the extra skater.

In doing so, Robertson sent the game into overtime as he scored on the 6-on-5 with 26 seconds left in regulation. On the play leading to the goal, Georgiev made a kick save that shot back out to the Stars, who cycled it back throughout the zone. From the wall, Roope Hintz sent a pass down to Robertson at the edge of the left faceoff circle. Robertson turned and wired a wrist shot to the far side of Georgiev for the 2-2 equalizer that forced overtime.

In overtime, the Avalanche dominated possession and even received a power play midway through the period, but failed to convert which resulted in the game heading to a shootout.

In the shootout, Georgiev denied Tyler Seguin, Joe Pavelski and Robertson to backstop his team to collect the full two-point victory, while Oettinger denied Nathan MacKinnon. Rantanen came through clutch as he scored the shootout winner on a sharp snipe to the far side of Oettinger.
