Canon officially announces the company’s most technologically advanced full frame mirrorless camera, the professional grade EOS R3
MELVILLE, NY, September 14, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Building on the success of the EOS R series of cameras, Canon United States of America Inc., a leading provider of digital imaging solutions, today announced the next leap forward in full frame mirrorless cameras – the professional Canon EOS R3. The new camera takes advantage of the technological advances Canon has made since the introduction of the original EOS R in 2018 and bridges the gap between the hugely popular EOS R5 and the world famous Canon EOS-1D X line of products. The EOS R3 is Canon’s first “3” series camera since the widely popular EOS-3 film camera was launched in 1998.
The features of the EOS R3 camera emphasize the excellent AF performance and speed on fast-moving subjects. It is designed to meet the reliability and durability requirements of professionals even when working in extremely difficult conditions.
“The introduction of the EOS R3 sets a new benchmark for the Canon EOS R camera system. Canon listened carefully to the voices of professionals when developing a camera, ”said Tatsuro“ Tony ”Kano, Canon Executive Vice President and General Manager USA Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. “The EOS R3 is a monumental advancement in digital imaging technology. I look forward to seeing the camera in action on the sidelines of sporting events and in the hands of nature and wildlife photographers around the world. “
The heart of the EOS R3 is a 24.1 megapixel stacked CMOS sensor with backlighting developed and manufactured by Canon. The sensor is the first of its kind from Canon and, in combination with the DIGIC X processor, delivers a high-speed display that enables continuous recordings without blackout1 at up to 30 frames per second in electronic (noiseless) shutter mode and up to 12 frames per second in mechanical Shutter, with minimal rolling electronic shutter distortion. The combination also increases the high sensitivity and light capture efficiency of a native ISO range of 100-102400, expandable up to 204,800 for still images. Like the EOS R5 and R6, the camera has the improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 1,053 AF points and further developed EOS iTR tracking down to EV -7.5 for subjects such as eyes, face, head, animals2 and selected cars and Motorcycles. In addition, the camera offers up to 8 f-stops3 In-Body Image Stabilized (IBIS) camera shake correction.
Leveraging the technology and performance feedback from the popular EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras, the EOS R3 uses deep learning technology to further improve eye and body detection for even better performance in portrait and action shots. With a new electronic viewfinder with 5.76 million pixels and 120 frames per second without blackout1, the EOS R3 camera enables photographers to select the starting area for AF tracking by simply looking directly at the viewfinder position where they are with want to start AF. When eye entry AF2 and servo AF are activated, the camera focuses on moving subjects at this point in the image and follows them. When Face Detect + Tracking is active, the camera continues to track moving subjects throughout the active AF area.
In addition to capturing spectacular still images, the EOS R3 camera also offers impressive video specifications. The camera can take photos 6K 60p RAW and 4K 120p 10-bit uncut video with Canon Log 3 support, in addition to oversampling 4K and internal RAW movie recording. Canon Log 3, which is widely used in cinema production, helps reduce the possibility of highlight blowouts. In addition, functions such as the BT.709 industry standard, the BT.2020 color space and the cinema color space help maintain color and sound consistency. Coordinated 5-axis IBIS helps correct movement or shake of the operator and enables dependent video recording even when a lens without integrated optical IS is used.
Other features of the EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera include:
- Canon’s next-generation multifunctional shoe that is compatible with a wide variety of accessories including the Speedlite EL-1 and new accessories such as the Speedlite ST-E10 transmitter, external microphone and smartphone link adapter
- One-piece magnesium alloy design that integrates the body with a vertical handle section
- Weather and dust resistance equivalent to EOS-1D camera models.
- The Mobile File Transmitter app for iOS® and Android® devices enables photographers to transmit their images quickly and easily without the need for wired LAN equipment
- Integrated wired LAN, 5 GHz Wi-Fi®, USB and Bluetooth® technology
- Dual card slots that support a CF-Express and a UHS-II SD card
