JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ-Nachrichten) – A CAMPAIGN that got off to a good start and raised hopes of a return to the top group is degenerating into a crisis at Jomo Cosmos in a spectacular way.
Cosmos, the team in the worst form in the GladAfrica Championship, are not only without a win in six games. They’re still the only team in the entire South African professional setup that doesn’t win at home.
That’s more than half of the current campaign.
Their latest horror show came last weekend when they lost 3-1 at home to TS Sporting.
It’s the second game in a row that Cosmos has scored three goals after losing as many clean sheets to former Premiership colleague Polokwane City.
The best team from Jomo Sono, who managed a goalless home game against JDR Stars in six catastrophic games (five leagues, one cup), is a boring home game.
Ezenkosi has been out of joint since January 26th. This was the last time they tried to win (2-1) at Cape Town All Stars.
Once the joint leader of the national premier league, the men of Sono are now closer to relegation battle than title battle.
In the table with 16 teams, they have slipped to eleventh place.
With 28 points they are eight points behind the top of the table, a position that Richards Bay occupies.
Cosmos are seven points ahead of bottom-of-the-table Bizana Pondo Chiefs, who despite their poor debut were still good enough to beat Cosmos when the teams met in mid-February.
If the teams in the first division were set up at home, Ezenkosi would be at the bottom with five out of a possible 27 points. You’ve drawn five and lost four.
While the results represent a crisis in the field, the technical team downplayed such conversations.
“Well, it’s soccer. We will recover, ”said Sonos assistant Brian Sebapole in an interview with CAJ News Africa.
He said injuries had also contributed to the poor form in recent games and suspensions.
“We lost five key players – three in the first half – including the captain due to injuries during the Pondo Chiefs game. They’ve been out since then. Only three came back on Sunday (against TS Sporting), ”explained Sebapole.
Skipper Seun Ledwaba, Lehlohonolo Mtshali and Ricardo Versuur were injured in the first half against the Chiefs at Tsakane Stadium.
To recover, Cosmos will have to contend with an overcrowded game plan for the remainder of March.
This includes three games in a week.
You will be between the 13.
Cosmos lost to all three teams in the first round.
Sebapole said that despite the ongoing fighting, the team are confident of changing their luck.
“The mood is good. We continue to focus on every game that comes. As you can see, the (title) race is tough, ”he summed up.
The current form brings back memories of last season when the team flirted with relegation for most of the season and eventually finished 13th.
