Dine and Dash: Bear breaks into shop near Estes Park, enjoys cake

Bear reportedly broke into the Colorado Cherry Company

PINEWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – The Colorado Cherry Company has been a fixture along US 36 near Estes Park for decades.

The family business has seen its fair share of visitors over the years. But a visitor ate the goods and at the same time made a gigantic mess overnight from Monday to Tuesday.

It turns out bears are like cake. A lot.

Tourists stop at the store for the cake and hearty meals.

“We get a lot of tourists who go to Rocky Mountain National Park,” said Mikaela Lehnert.

However, she and her mother Kristi were not expecting their much bigger guest.

“He just got in. He jumped on the ovens and jumped off and has a feast, ”said Lehnert.

The bear has left his mark in front of the cellar door, where the pies are baked.

“These are paw prints. I assume he probably got up and looked and noticed that he couldn’t get in through the steel door, ”said Lehnert.

The bear broke through a window to get inside. For some reason the bear stayed on the side of the room with all the cakes. The surveillance camera is pointed in the opposite direction, so you never actually saw the bear in a video recording.

The bear did not notice that the freezer nearby had more food. The animal clearly preferred warm pies over frozen ones.

“Cherry and apple was his favorite. He handed over the strawberry-rhubarb, ”said Kristi. “Maybe it didn’t feel like a cake, I guess,” said Lehnert.

Apparently the bear has been in business before. A neighbor took a picture and the Lehnerts believe it’s the same one that broke into their store overnight.

“Just devoured cakes, sugar, cocoa and left a mess,” says Lehnert.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife experts don’t track the number of bears and humans interactions, but they do see dozens of bears rummaging through trash and rummaging through property every year.

There is a trace of sugar outside the store. And a piece of cherries.

“I’m looking for a server, so maybe if he wants to come back because the talent is to bring two cakes to the backyard,” said Lehnert.

How the bear took takeaway cakes can only be guessed at. But hopefully a boarded up window will add some extra assertiveness to keep them from coming back.
