Elon Musk seems to agree with many that hyper-mysterious cryptocurrency expert Nick Szabo could be Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of the digital currency Bitcoin.

“You can see the evolution of ideas before Bitcoin was launched and see who wrote about those ideas,” Musk told artificial intelligence researcher Lex Fridman on a podcast posted Tuesday when asked what he thought about Nakamotos Identity think.

The Tesla billionaire said although he “obviously” didn’t know who created Bitcoin, Szabo’s theories seemed fundamental to the creation of the leading cryptocurrency.

“It seems like Nick Szabo is probably responsible for developing these ideas more than anyone,” he said. “He claims he’s not a Nakamoto, but I’m not sure it’s neither here nor there. But he seems to be the one more responsible for the ideas behind Bitcoin than anyone else.”

Bitcoin was first proposed in October 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym that people believed could be one or more people.

In 2014, a team of linguists examined Nakamoto’s Bitcoin whitepaper along with the writing of Szabo and 10 other possible creators. They found the results incontestable.

“The number of linguistic similarities between Szabo’s writing and the Bitcoin whitepaper is eerie,” said the researchers, adding, “None of the other possible authors went anywhere near as well together.”

A 2015 New York Times report also pinned the invention of Bitcoin to Szabo. He has spoken publicly about the history of bitcoin and blockchain technology, but has repeatedly denied claims that he is the anonymous inventor of the digital asset. Another reason he is associated with Bitcoin is his creation of the cryptocurrency “Bit Gold” in 1998.

Musk indicated that he did not attach much importance to the identity of the creator of Bitcoin: “What is a name anyway? It’s a name associated with an idea.

To back up his thoughts, he quoted William Shakespeare as saying, “A rose with any other name would smell just as sweet.”
