EOS token prices have rocketed after it was revealed that blockchain developer Daniel Larimer is stepping down from his role as Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Block. One, the company that ran the network.
At the time of writing (10:20 UTC), EOS is the worst performing coin by market cap among the top 70 cryptoassets while many other cryptoassets are in double digits today. It trades at USD 2.76 and is down nearly 26% in one day, wiping out almost all of the gains made over the past week. The price is down almost 2% in a month and 11% in a year.
Larimer claimed he wanted to focus his efforts on developing “censorship-resistant” technologies, which can only be felt as a massive blow to EOS.
And both the market and the crypto social media space don’t seem to have received the news well. Eric Turner, Messari’s chief researcher, tweeted
“EOS Reddit is not a happy place right now.”
In fact, the Reddit community in question is currently rife with allegations and declarations of EOS owners’ intentions to leave the room. One claims that the “template is high” and calls Larimer’s move “the last nail in the coffin for a coin.”
The news was released in a post on The Voice, the social media platform operated by Block. One, on which the former CTO stated:
“I will turn my attention to creating tools that people can use to secure their own freedom. I wish Block. One all the best in their future endeavors. “
“I have come to believe that ‘freedom as a service’ cannot be offered,” he added.
And in a cryptic but ominous-sounding Twitter post over the weekend, he stated that he was “going to give up” Twitter, adding that it was his “last chance to download certain apps from Apple,” possibly based on recent events related to Capitol Hill.
Latimer joined Block. One in 2017 and is considered the driving force behind the Steemit platform.
