Former Cosmos midfielder Juan Guerra has hung his boots for good to get a seat on the bench.
Guerra announced his retirement as a player on Wednesday and joined Indy Eleven as an assistant coach ahead of the 2019 United Soccer League Championship.
“Juan has had great experiences as a player at home and abroad and I am sure he will make a very good coach,” said Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie. “He is a hardworking, hardworking person who will contribute a lot to our club in his new role.”
The 31-year-old Guerra played a pivotal role in Indy Eleven midfield in 2018. In 25 starts, the 31-year-old completed more than 80 percent of his passes, created nine chances, scored two assists and scored one goal.
“I’ve always wanted to train,” he said. “It was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to train after my active career. I would like to thank Ersal Ozdemir and Martin Rennie for this opportunity, ”said Guerra. “This is a fantastic club and I am looking forward to stepping into my new role with this great group of guys and incredible supporters.”
Guerra spent two seasons with USL Championship Club Tampa Bay Rowdies and one season with former North American soccer league club Cosmos.
He played for Florida International University before starting his professional career at the Venezuelan clubs Monagas SC and Caracas FC, the most successful club in Venezuelan history. The midfielder has played four international matches with the Venezuelan national team, including two appearances for the 2014 World Cup qualification.
