First launched in 2001, the Chevrolet Avalanche offers the auto industry a unique pickup option as its rear seat area is only separated from the open bed by a folding wall. Though discontinued, the Avalanche was a constant competitor in the sport-utility truck segment and is still recognizable on the roads today.
Roadworthy: These are the best Chevy vehicles for road trips
The Avalanche was first introduced in 2001 and was based on the same platform as the Chevy Suburban and Cadillac Escalade EXT. Manufactured at the General Motors plant in Silao, Mexico, the sport utility truck offers both the comfort of a family-friendly SUV and the cargo space of a pickup truck, and appeals to consumers who lead hard working lifestyles. The Avalanche had a few different engine options when it debuted, including a massive 8.1-liter V8 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. In its last generation, which started in 2007, the Avalanche was instead powered by a 5.3-liter V8.
A special North Face edition of the Avalanche was available during the first generation of the truck, adding features in line with the outdoor lifestyle brand. This included an ebony / green leather interior, limited exterior colors, exclusive exterior accents and decals, OnStar, special door trim inserts and speaker grilles, white-painted displays, and more. And in 2003 the Avalanche was ahead of its time with an available rear DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones.
In the second generation, a 2007 avalanche was awarded to the MVP of the MLB All-Star Game, Michael Young. The avalanche has also appeared in other forms of media and pop culture outside of sport. The model was widely used at CSI: New York by members of the investigation team. In addition, an Avalanche LTZ was shown in the film Baby Driver 2017.
Throughout its lifespan, the Avalanche won a number of awards, including Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year in 2002. It was also nominated for the North American Truck of the Year Award in 2002, but lost to the Chevy TrailBlazer. Unfortunately, it was announced in 2012 that the Chevy Avalanche would be discontinued after the 2013 model year. However, according to some rumors from various auto journalists that the truck would like to make a comeback, there is no telling what will happen in the future!
