IOTA Foundation selected as partner for Japanese Advanced Data Storage Project

The IOTA Foundation is to provide technical infrastructure for the ambitious Japanese technology project.

Japan chooses IOTA for the data maintenance project

According to a report published November 4th by Japan Today, a Germany-based non-profit organization – the IOTA Foundation – has been selected by Japan to provide the technical infrastructure for the world’s first predictive maintenance system for industrial plants.

In particular, the Japanese government-funded project is the world’s first predictive maintenance system for industrial plants that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology to securely store data.

Funded by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization – a national research and development agency subordinate to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry – the project has selected the IOTA Foundation as its technology partner.

Interestingly, the project will leverage IOTA’s unique Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) infrastructure, called Tangle, to move data to a decentralized database. In addition, AI is being used to replace engineers amid the shrinking workforce in Japan.

The Tangle enables each node in the distributed ledger database, which is distributed across multiple locations in a peer-to-peer network, to replicate and store an identical copy of the ledger and update itself independently.

The report reads in part:

“The project, which aims to strengthen the durability of critical infrastructures, will optimize facility management systems used in power plants, industrial, petrochemical and oil refineries across Japan by digitizing maintenance data and using artificial intelligence to predict when reviews will be needed, the foundation said. “

In addition, the decentralized nature of the database will make it more resilient to cyberattacks and at the same time make it easier for partners to exchange data across the long supply chain.

It’s also worth noting that IOTA’s association with the project marks the first time the IOTA Foundation has allied with an organization in Japan.

IOTA is nearing the completion of decentralization

After the unfortunate Trinity wallet hack earlier this year, IOTA has rebounded with guns blazing, sharing impressive data and progress in its quest for full decentralization in the form of IOTA 2.0.

The IOTA Foundation recently announced the last alpha version for IOTA Streams – an open source DLT protocol that will enable encrypted and decentralized data streaming.
