Keanu Reeves talks about crypto, metaverse and NFTs
Famous Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves spoke about cryptocurrency, the metaverse, digital content and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in an interview with The Verge last week.
Reeves and co-star Carrie-Anne Moss were interviewed to do “The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience,” a playable tech demo from Epic Games and what to expect from their upcoming Matrix Resurrections film. The two stars also discussed how technology is blurring the line between the real and the virtual.
During the interview, Reeves commented on the Metaverse and Facebook, the social media giant that recently changed its name to Meta. “Couldn’t we have invented Metaverse like Facebook did?” He said and explained:
The concept of Metaverse is much older.
He was also asked, “Do you think it’s dystopian how the original Matrix presented it all … a kind of dystopia where technology has gone.”
Reeves replied, “Yes,” adding, “Because it’s content creation too, it’s okay, it’s economic creation, cryptocurrency …”
The Matrix star didn’t fully answer the question when interrupted by a question about whether he owns cryptocurrency. “Is any of you personally into cryptocurrency?” he and Moss were asked. While Moss didn’t respond to crypto, Reeves shared:
A friend of mine bought me some a while ago.
Regarding his cryptocurrency, Reeves was asked: “But you didn’t do anything with it?” The actor replied, “I didn’t have to.” Then he was explained what crochet means. “Yes, I have a little Hodl,” he admitted.
On the subject of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Reeves was asked if he had seen the Matrix NFTs for the upcoming Matrix Resurrections film. He admitted he hadn’t seen her and wondered if he and Moss would even get paid to do it.
When asked what he thought of the concept of digital scarcity, Reeves laughed, adding that they are still “easily reproduced”. You can see the full interview here.
