It’s 22nd May, Crypto enthusiasts around the world are relishing a Pizza, with the same vibe as having turkey on thanksgiving!! OK. But why is having Pizza, the most staple food a celebration today you ask. Because it’s 22nd May folks.

11 years ago, this day a programmer from Florida decided to have free pizza’s and the rest is no short of a revolution.

Let’s recollect the saga of “The Bitcoin Pizza Day” on its 11th Year Anniversary Today. What is its relevance now, how much are the pizzas worth today, and how are crypto establishments celebrating. Let’s take a look at all of this and more.

What is Bitcoin Pizza Day?

Every year on May 22, “Bitcoin Pizza Day” is celebrated to mark the historic event in the cryptocurrency industry. Ie, for the first time ever, on May 22, 2010, the now crypto giant Bitcoin was used for a real-life transaction.

Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer in Florida who was a part of the nascent stages of Bitcoin decided he had to put his mined tokens to use. He then put out a message on Bitcoin Talk Forum saying I’ll pay you 10000 Bitcoins for 2 Pizzas. Eventually, a man on the forum took up the offer and got Hanyecz, 2 Pizzas delivered from Papa Johns. This happening gave birth to what’s now a celebration day for Bitcoiners worldwide.

story time!

Back when Bitcoin was known and understood by very few people and was worth just 0.004. One of the developers of the token Laszlo Hanyecz thought it would be really cool to trade open-source internet money for real-world good.

He put out a message on the Bitcointalk forum that read – “I’ll pay 10000 Bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some leftover for the next day”

“I like having leftover pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a ‘breakfast platter’ at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you’re happy!”

Two days later, a British guy named Jeremy Sturdivant AKA Jercos got in touch with Laszlo via internet relay chat and offered to broker the deal. Finally, Jercos spent $40 for two pizzas and got them delivered from Papa John’s. And, that’s how history was made.

This is one crazy story! In case you’re wondering if Laszlo regrets his move, now that it’s worth $400 million. No, he doesn’t. In an interview, he says it’s pretty cool to have a holiday in my honor.

10000 BTC is now worth over $400 million

On the same Bitcointalk forum thread, Months later a member asked, “Will this eventually be the world’s first million-dollar pizza”? Well, that did happen. 10000 BTC is now worth over $400 million.

This story isn’t about how a guy blew 10000 BTC now worth $400 million on just 2 pizzas. This is a story about how an internet money token worth just 0.004 decades later is now worth $45000 and above.

Bitcoin has started a revolution of decentralized finance and it’s been one hell of a ride. From prices being subject to intense market volatility, restrain from the traditional financial markets to being considered digital gold, mode of payment, and fortune 500 companies investing in it. Bitcoin has come a long way and this day is the celebration of this evolution.
