The designer behind a number of new mirror pools in Hull’s Trinity Square says he’s “thrilled” after they were completed.
Eight rectangular water features at floor level now shimmer in the shadow of Hull Minster.
They are slated to officially open on Monday, but the people who work in and visit the old town are already enjoying a preview now that the last security barriers are removed.
Mel Chantrey, who also designed the dance fountains in Queen Victoria Square, said, “The mirror pools are my favorite of the two.
“Part of the idea for her came from my childhood. I grew up on a community property that, for some reason, was built on a natural spring.
“Every now and then, water would bubble to the surface and splash around your feet.
“I’ve put some of that into the mirror pools and I’m thrilled with the way they turned out. I think they’re magical and it’s great just to watch people trying to figure out what’s going on.”

Each pool has computer-controlled water patterns that ripple over the new cobblestones in the square.
Mr. Chantrey said, “The patterns reflect the architecture of the church. They are meant to be reflective and give people time to pause and reflect.”
