Nissan Terra revealed; Will Rival Fortuner, aspiration

Although the SUV specified in China is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, the Terra will eventually have a diesel option for other markets as well

Nissan has fully unveiled its new full-size premium SUV, the Terra, for the Chinese market. It’s Nissan’s first ladderframe-based offering in a long time and will rival SUVs like the Ford Endeavor and Toyota Fortuner in markets like Thailand. Like its competitors, the Terra is based on a popular pickup, the Nissan Navara.

The Nissan Terra is equipped with LED projector headlights with LEDs that run during the day and taillights with LED graphics. This is identical to what you see in the Fortuner and Endeavor too. However, the Ford does offer bi-xenon projectors.

Audio system

The Nissan Terra has a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system coupled with a 6-speaker system like the Fortuner. Both the Fortuner and the Terra lack connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Endeavor gets it all right here as it has a larger screen (8 inches) and offers both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The Endeavor also comes with a standard 10 speaker system that has active noise cancellation. The Endeavor’s infotainment system automatically calls emergency services in the event of an accident (airbags deployed).

Comfort and convenience

The Terra has features such as passive keyless entry with start-stop function of the push-button motor, a powered driver’s seat, ambient lighting, two-zone climate control, an electric sunroof and leather upholstery. It is largely similar to the Fortuner’s equipment list, with the exception of the two-zone air conditioning and the sliding roof. The Endeavor, on the other hand, offers more, as it has a larger panoramic sliding roof, multi-colored ambient lighting, a semi-autonomous parking function and a programmable button (start-stop at the push of a button should be offered with the upcoming facelift).

All three SUVs offer up to seven airbags (Endeavor offers six airbags in which the driver’s knee airbag is missing), ABS with EBD and brake assist as well as ESP (electronic stability program), TC (traction control), hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring system and Isofix child seat anchor.

The Nissan Navara is powered by a 2.5 liter naturally aspirated petrol engine that develops 183 hp and 251 Nm. The engine is connected to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic. Like its competitors, it offers both rear-wheel and all-wheel setups. The Terra is also expected to receive a diesel engine (on loan from Navara) for other markets.

It could be the Navara’s 2.3-liter twin-turbo diesel or the 2.5-liter diesel. Both engines developed 190 hp and 450 Nm. It’s just that the torque in the twin turbo unit drops significantly: at around 1500 rpm compared to 2000 rpm in the 2.5 liter unit. The transmission options should be similar to the 2.5 liter gasoline. Nissan could offer one of the two diesel engines together with gasoline like the Fortuner.

Will it come to India?

Nissan Terra

After China, Nissan has already announced the Terra for the Philippines and then also Thailand. We believe Nissan will launch it in India at some point, and its competitors are doing pretty well here. The Ford Endeavor, for example, sells ~ 500 units per month while the Toyota Fortuner sells around 2,000 units. The combined retail number of these leadframe-based SUVs is well over double the sales of monocoque SUVs at similar prices (~ 30-35 lakh) to the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq. Additionally, Nissan certainly needs more products in its current portfolio, which is currently uncompetitive, aging and boring compared to some other mass market players.
