Phi Delta Theta Raises Funding for ALS Research – MSU Reporter

When you are angry, stressed out, or frustrated a lot of people will tell you to take a deep breath and relax.

Phi Delta Theta has a better idea: grab a sledgehammer and start whaling on a battered old junkie car.

For just a dollar per hit, it’s an easy way for students to blow off some steam. This auto smack down has been going on for over a decade and has grown in popularity ever since.

“It was honestly so nice to have that as a stress reliever,” said MNSU freshman Dayton Frost. “Sometimes you don’t want to finish things off. Sometimes you just want to hit something! “

This memorable event began when some alumni of the Phi Delta Theta Brotherhood came up and offered their advice and opinions on how to improve the brotherhood. What started as an idea quickly became a reality when Phi Delta Theta put all the pieces together to make this fundraiser come true.

Since then, it has grown into a thriving fundraiser helping to raise money for charity and giving stressed-out students a chance to relieve tension and frustration.

Joel Mowrey, a senior at Phi Delta Theta, pointed out that this isn’t a normal fundraiser.

“I love to be part of such a well-known tradition. Our brotherhood has been doing this for as long as I can remember, which means around 2008, ”Mowrey explained. “Our goal is to do it every semester, but it doesn’t often happen that we find a car that is so shabby that it actually hits a hammer that a car junkyard is ready to just hand over.”

In recent years, the Brotherhood has used all donations to research ALS, a rare and previously incurable disease that causes muscles to weaken and atrophy.

Over the three days the event was held this semester, $ 900 was raised and donated to this research.

Freshman Paige Peterson said she was excited about the opportunity.

“I wish they had this year-round option,” she said. “I would be wasting so much money driving this car.”
