Niantic, the studio is a smartphone hit Pokémon GO, borrowed its AR platform to payment company Fold to create a new breed of “catch ’em all” adventure – but this time around, players are hunting for the cryptocurrency Bitcoin rather than monsters.
Payment company Fold leveraged Niantic’s AR platform to create an in-app experience where users can earn Bitcoin by exploring a virtual environment based on their immediate surroundings, which the company calls “real-world metaverse “is described.
Users can use the app to discover and collect Bitcoin and other prizes in their area. Every 10 minutes a new block with a new price is placed near a player. By claiming the block, the user earns “satoshis”, the smallest unit of Bitcoin, among other rewards. However, if you collect “s ** tcoins” or “poison pills”, you may end up losing all of the bitcoins you have collected.
This is how Fold describes the experience on his blog – it’s even cheeky enough to use a gif of Mario collecting coins in Super Mario world:
The AR experience acts as a natural extension of the Fold app, which already gives you the ability to earn Bitcoin for your daily life: buy coffee, go shopping, pay bills, and even pay your taxes. While the experience is open to everyone, fold card holders can collect additional spins and reward boosts to increase their rewards on the fold card.
The full experience will fall next year and will allow individuals to find, trade, and hide Bitcoin and other rewards around the world, and allow traders to engage the community with incentives and offers. It all started with someone saying, “Let’s do PokemonGo except for Bitcoin” and ended with “Let’s develop a new way to exchange and share Bitcoin with others”.

Fold CEO Will Reeves also said:
This is the easiest and most fun way to get your first piece of Bitcoin. Everyone can use ours [Fold] App to earn Bitcoin and other rewards by exploring the world around you. For us it has always been important to make it easy for everyone to participate in the Bitcoin economy, regardless of education or technical know-how.
