Ripple’s regular money transfer from its escrow wallet to a hot wallet is always noticed by crypto whale watchers like Whale Alert, who tracks large movements of coins. Ripple does a wire transfer at the beginning of each month and usually gives a large portion of the XRP back to the escrow account. They’re smart contracted to use the full amount if needed, but prices have been kind to them over the past few years.
Here’s a tweet from Whale Alert this morning:
However, their latest move used Ripple’s “memo” feature to insert a cryptic message:
“The revolution will be televised …”
Will Ripple’s Revolution be televised?
The note is a reference to “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” a famous quote from a Gil Scott Heron song from the 1970s.
The line from Heron’s song / poem has been referred to frequently by radical movements. The song tells of how revolutionary thinking was adopted by the mainstream media and hipsters of the time. It is most blatantly outlined in the following lines:
There will be no slow motion or still life of
Roy Wilkens strolls in a red and black and through Watts
Green liberation jumpsuit that he had saved
For exactly the right occasion
Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, and
Hooterville Junction isn’t going to be that damn relevant anymore
and women won’t care if Dick finally comes along
Jane at Search for Tomorrow because black
I’ll be on the street looking for a brighter day
Memos are becoming a habit for Ripple
This isn’t the first time Ripple has included a memo on its escrow movement. Last month they wrote “Crawl … walk … run …” referencing Ripple Labs CEO’s Q&A session on Quora in October 2017.
Brad Garlinghouse had said:
“[I]It’s safe to say that before we run we have to crawl before we run. This is new territory for banks and payment providers, and it will be some time before you see widespread adoption of digital assets solving this multi-trillion dollar opportunity. Suffice it to say that we are very pleased about the interest of various pilots that our customers already operate. “
This is the fourth time Ripple has made a cryptic memo. The first time was in November and said:
PublicServiceAnnouncement: Always avoid green eggs and ham
Then they did it again in December when they wrote:
It’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how.
The January extract did not contain a memo.
Ripple’s comment that the revolution is “televised” is cryptic at best. Are they referring to an upcoming livestream? Does Ripple see itself as a mediator of change? Ripple does the occasional live-stream question-and-answer sessions and often engages in social media to connect with its user base. But what “revolution” are we talking about? The blockchain revolution? Which part is televised?
Perhaps at CCN.com we are very specific about the poetic nature of the memo. We just want some clarification, Ripple. We also wonder what else the monthly memo could be used for.
For its part, Ripple has been thriving since XRP was listed on Coinbase. They are held steady above $ 0.32 with a daily volume of over $ 700 million at press time. So far, the “coinbase effect” has not defeated the recent upward momentum that XRP has picked up.
