The start of Stargate enables the cross-chain IBC protocol for Cosmos SDK blockchains »CryptoNinjas

Cosmos, an interoperable blockchain ecosystem, has announced the launch of Stargate, a series of upgrades that will bring significant new features and performance improvements to blockchains created with the Cosmos Software Developer Kit (SDK). These upgrades include the highly anticipated Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, which provides true interoperability by allowing blockchains to communicate with one another – a new standard for cross-blockchain coordination and sharing.

Christopher Goes, the lead developer of the IBC protocol, commented: “For the first time, blockchains can be confidently connected – a new era of networked blockchains, much like TCP-IP in an era of networked computers. IBC will have a transformative impact on the blockchain space by creating an ecosystem of politically independent chains that can interact through trade and information exchange. The joining together of many different blockchains can form a new crypto-economic system that is more resilient, more efficient and locally more sovereign. “

IBC provides the reliable backbone for a new token economy and enables everyone worldwide to enable a fast and secure exchange across chains. The Cosmos Hub is the first blockchain to support IBC in production. Stargate enables Cosmos SDK-based blockchains to integrate the IBC protocol, to enable communication with other compatible blockchains and to exchange data and token values securely via different blockchains.

Other performance improvements released with the Stargate upgrade include: support for the Protobuf serialization format, increasing efficiency and usability to optimize the blockchain developer experience; State Sync, which reduces the synchronization time for the entire node to less than 30 minutes; Automatic upgrades, which simplify the upgrade process and make it easier to migrate from one version to the next, as well as improved light client security, which supports the detection of new classes of misbehavior and dramatically increases the client and IBC connection guarantees.

Stargate is the largest software upgrade in Cosmos history and a collaboration between seven distributed units in the ecosystem. Based on decades of academic research, these teams share the vision of delivering an academic, verifiable and robust “Internet of Blockchains”. This collaboration was led by the Regen, Interchain GmbH, Agoric, Tendermint Inc., Akash, Informal Systems and Iqlusion teams.

Cosmos is a decentralized network of independent, scalable and interoperable blockchains with more than 200 projects in the Cosmos Tendermint ecosystem, 70 of which operate a mainnet. Focusing on scalability and ease of use, Cosmos enables developers to build blockchain applications quickly and easily. By allowing blockchains to do business with each other, Cosmos creates a network of application-specific chains that includes user-owned and operated platforms for decentralized finance (DeFi), social impact, privacy, gaming, and secure enterprise systems.

Ethan Buchman, Co-Founder of Cosmos, commented: “We are about to evolve from the Web to Web 3.0 and the Stargate version brings the Cosmos ‘Internet of Blockchains’ to life. Sovereignty and interoperability are no longer mutually exclusive and we are happy to welcome people to the Cosmos ecosystem so that we can build the decentralized web together. “
